| एक दशक पूर्व 23 जुलाई,1999 को नासा ने अंतरिक्ष में एक महत्वपूर्ण वेधशाला, कोलंबिया अंतरिक्ष यान से पृथ्वी की कक्षा में प्रतिस्थापित की जिसका नाम इसने रखा “चंद्र वेधशाला”. इसका नामकरण भारतीय मूल के सुप्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक सुब्रामनियन चंद्रशेखर के नाम पर रखा गया है. |

| यह वेधशाला 5 वर्ष के कार्यकाल के लिए अंतरिक्ष में भेजी गई थी लेकिन इसने अब सफलतापू्र्वक 10 वर्ष पूरे कर लिए हैं. “चंद्र वेधशाला” ने खगोलविदों को धूमकेतु, ब्लैक होल, डार्क मैटर व डार्क एनर्जी जैसे विषयों की पड़ताल में बहुत महत्वपूर्ण जानकारियां उपलब्ध करवाई हैं. |
